U.S. politics: McCarthy ousted as House speaker in unprecedented vote

Last week, something really dramatic happened at Capitol Hill in the United States. The people who make laws there were not happy with the leader of the lower house of Congress, Speaker Kevin McCarthy. So, they voted to remove him from his job on Tuesday. This vote made history because it hasn't happened before.

Some Republicans who are very conservative were not pleased with how McCarthy was leading, and this caused a lot of confusion among the Republican members of the House. Representative Matt Gaetz from Florida, who didn't like McCarthy, started a process called a "motion to vacate." He got support from other Republicans who also didn't like McCarthy, as well as some Democrats who thought McCarthy was not suitable for the job.

Now, the House of Representatives is taking a break after this big vote. This has never happened before in the history of the House. The House needs to pick a new leader, but there isn't a clear choice that everyone agrees on.

This situation is making the tensions among the Republicans in the House even worse. They have been arguing with each other for some time now. This all happened shortly after McCarthy managed to get both Republicans and Democrats to work together to stop the government from shutting down.

Because McCarthy is no longer the leader, another Republican, Representative Patrick McHenry from North Carolina, who is a close friend of McCarthy, will take care of things temporarily. He has a special title called "speaker pro tempore," which means he can handle things like breaks, ending meetings, and helping to choose a new speaker. Please Share This News Thank You
