US Presidential Election 2024: Indian Americans divided over Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley

Two Indian American candidates, Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley, are running for the 2024 US Presidential elections. But Indian American voters are split over these two Republican candidates.

Indian Americans make up about 16% of Asian Americans who can vote. They are the third-largest Asian group in the US, after Chinese and Filipino Americans, according to the New York Times. In the past, most Indian Americans supported the Democratic Party.

Even though they are a small group of voters, they can still make a big impact in key states like Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Nevada.

Indian Americans Can't Agree on Candidates:
The New York Times found that many Indian Americans they talked to were frustrated and concerned about the strong stances of these two candidates. Some worried that Ramaswamy's promise to get rid of the Department of Education could harm institutions that have helped Indian Americans succeed.

Suresh Reddy, a moderate Democrat and city councilman, watched the Republican primary and felt proud but disappointed. He said, "I'm proud, but I wish they had a better message."

Another Democrat, Venu Rao, a retired engineer and program manager in Hollis, mentioned that Haley and Ramaswamy represent the diverse beliefs of South Asian Americans, even though he doesn't agree with them.

Nikhil Voothkur, a 20-year-old student at Tufts University in Boston, believes it's great to see two people who look like him on national TV. But he also thinks that as the Indian American community grows, it has different opinions on issues.

Nishant Kumar, his wife Smita Nishant, and their 17-year-old daughter Ankita Yadav recently became US citizens and live near Des Moines. They used to vote for Democrats, but they find Ramaswamy smart and refreshing.

In simple terms, two Indian American candidates, Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley, are running for the 2024 US Presidential elections. But Indian American voters can't agree on who to support.
