Political red herring: On the move to impeach Joe Biden

Published  25-09-2023

The U.S. House of Representatives Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, who is a Republican, recently said that they want to impeach President Joe Biden. This isn't surprising for the Democrats. It's happening because the next presidential election is in just over a year, and the Republicans might benefit by creating distractions. They want to divert people's attention from the fact that the U.S. economy has improved after the slowdown caused by the pandemic.

Kevin McCarthy is focusing on President Biden's son, Hunter Biden, and his business dealings during his father's time as Vice President in the Obama administration. But the evidence against the Biden family is not very strong. The House Oversight Committee said Hunter Biden and his associates got more than $20 million from foreign sources, but when they checked the bank records, they didn't find proof. There were also claims that the Biden name was used to gain favor in business, but a group called the Congressional Integrity Project, which supports Democrats, found that these claims didn't hold up.

There were even allegations that Hunter Biden paid off prosecutors to end an investigation into a Ukrainian energy company called Burisma, where he was on the board. But they couldn't find solid proof for this either. Also, claims that the Justice Department interfered in a tax investigation of Hunter Biden based on two whistleblowers' testimony don't seem to have strong evidence.

Even if Kevin McCarthy succeeds in impeaching President Biden, he will likely be cleared of charges in the Senate. Here's the big thing: Former President Donald Trump was impeached twice in the past. Maybe Kevin McCarthy is trying to make it seem like it's the same thing as what happened to Trump. He might be doing this to try and reduce support for the Democrats in the next election. But this move could backfire because it might push more Democrats to support Biden, and independent voters might see it as just political fighting and remember Trump's influence on the Republican Party.
