Joe Biden defends UAW strike; tells industry they must share record profits

President Joe Biden is telling the big car companies in Detroit to give some of their profits to their workers. He said this after 13,000 auto workers went on strike because they couldn't agree on a contract with the car companies.

Biden said that the car companies have made lots of money but haven't shared it with their workers. He explained that while nobody wants to go on strike, it's important for workers to have the right to do so and to talk together with their bosses.

Biden thinks that the car companies should offer better deals to the workers. He called on both sides to sit down and talk until they reach an agreement. To help with this, he's sending two important people from his team to Detroit.

The workers stopped working when their contracts ended on Thursday night. They stopped working at specific places run by Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, which makes Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Fiat cars. This is the first time in 88 years that the union has gone on strike against all three companies at the same time.

If the strike goes on for a long time, it could hurt the economy in ten different states, not just Michigan. Biden is saying all this at a time when many Americans are worried about prices going up, which suggests that his message about the economy might not be getting through.

The auto workers' union is asking for a 40% increase in wages over the contract's duration. They also want adjustments to their pay to keep up with rising prices, better retirement plans for all workers, fewer hours of work each week, more paid time off, and better benefits for retirees. They also want the car companies to hire fewer temporary workers.

The strike began late on Thursday when contract talks didn't lead to a deal. Workers at three different car plants in Michigan, Ohio, and Missouri went on strike. They are using a strategy where they'll choose more plants to strike at if the talks continue to fail. This keeps the car companies unsure and could help the workers get a better deal.
